British Health Secretary Sajid Javid on Wednesday defended ministers and MPs not wearing face coverings in Parliament and offices, saying it’s “perfectly consistent” with government guidelines. Legal requirements in England on mask-wearing and social distancing ended on July 19, when the nation moved into the fourth and final stage of Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s roadmap out of lockdown. Current guidance advises people to “wear a face covering in crowded and enclosed spaces where you come into contact with people you do not normally meet”—advice reiterated in the government’s COVID-19 autumn and winter plan published on Tuesday.
