RIVERSIDE, CA – Flags lining a fence in Riverside meant to honor the 13 fallen US Military service members killed by a suicide bomber in Afghanistan last month were vandalized this week.
Sometime over labor day weekend, the flags, which were located on the Ivy Street overpass above the 91 Freeway, were intentionally damaged, according to police. A citizen noticed the damage and called the police to report it.
There were 13 American flags and one United States Marine Corp flag hung up, all of which were vandalized.

“It’s obvious the flags were intentionally damaged,” police said, thanking the citizen for bringing it to their attention.
Military Times reported that someone severely vandalized flags hung on a Southern California freeway overpass to honor the 13 U.S. service members killed in the suicide bombing at Afghanistan’s Kabul airport on Aug. 26, police said.
A citizen reported the damage to the 13 American flags and a Marine Corps flag that were attached to a fence on a bridge over the State Route 91 freeway in the city of Riverside, local police said in a social media post on Tuesday.
“At this point, we don’t have any suspect description but it’s obvious the flags were intentionally damaged,” police said.
Two people helped the police take down the damaged flags. Boy Scout Troop 703 received them and will be properly retiring them.
There are no suspects at this time.
